Learn how to play Classic Blackjack like a pro!

  • Blackjack is a classic casino game that is loved by many.

  • The goal of the game is to beat the dealer by reaching a score of 21 or less, without going over.

  • You can achieve this by choosing any 2 cards from your hand, and adding the value of those cards together.

  • If you hit 21 ('blackjack'), the dealer must also blackjack in order to win the hand. In this case, the payout is 3 to 2.

  • If your total card value is more than 21, then you bust and automatically lose the hand.

  • The dealer will always draw another card if their first card is worth less than 6. If their first card is 6 or higher, they will stand on that number.

How to play blackjack:

  • To begin the game, all players must place their bet in the designated area on the table. The minimum bet for blackjack is usually $1, but this may vary depending on where you're playing. Once all bets are placed, each player is dealt two cards face-down. The dealer then receives two cards - one face-up and one face-down. Theface-up card is called the 'upcard' and gives players an idea of what type of hand the dealer might have. It's important to remember that dealers must hit on 16 or lower and stand on 17 or higher.
  • Following these basic rules, players now need to decide what move to make for their hand. This can be done by either hitting (taking another card), standing (keeping your current total), doubling down ( doubling your bet and taking one more card), splitting (splitting pairs into two separate hands) or surrendering (giving up half your bet and forfeiting your hand).

Hitting:

If you decide to hit, you place another chip next to your original bet and receive one more card from the dealer. You can continue hitting until you either reach 21 or go over (bust). At this point, your hand is turned over and shown to all players at the table.

Standing:

Standing means keeping your current total and not taking any more cards from the dealer. You can only stand if your current total falls within the following guidelines: 17 - 21 (hard totals) or 12 - 16 (soft totals).

Doubling Down:

Doubling down means doubling your original bet and receiving just one more card from the dealer. This move should only be used when you feel confident about beating the dealer's hand - usually with a hard total of 9, 10 or 11 points. After doubling down, players cannot hit anymore; they must stand on whatever value their double down card results in* (# Rules for Splitting Pairs & Surrendering below).

Basic Strategy Chart:

Player's Hand Dealer's Upcard 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Ace Hard Totals Soft Totals A 7 S 17 H 3 D 2 C 7 S 14 H 6 D 3 C 9 S 18 H 4 D 2 C 10 S 19 H 3 D 2 B 8 S 17 H 4 D 2 C 8 S 15 H 7 D 3 C 10 S 20 H 3 D 2 A soft total would be Ace +6 which would result in 12 since Ace can count as 1 or 11 points). **A hard total would be Ace +5 which would result in 6 since Ace can only count as 1 point

  • Always stand if your hand totals 17 or more.

  • If the dealer has an Ace showing, hit if your hand total is between 11 and 16. Otherwise, stand.

  • If the dealer has a 2-6 showing, hit if your hand total is 12 or below. Otherwise, stand.
